Biography

Damien Rieu, whose real name is Damien Lefevre, is a French far-right politician. He became one of the most visible and active members of France’s extreme right. Damien was raised by a communist militant father in a far-left environment. However, at the age of 17, he decided to join the youth section of Jean-Marie Le Pen’s far-right National Front party. As a consequence, Damien’s father pushed him out of the family home. Damien spent time in homeless shelters and quickly left the FNJ party and co-founded Generation Identitaire (GI), a pan-European movement known for its anti-Muslim, xenophobic, and anti-immigration stances. GI views immigration as “colonisation” and declares that its “ideal is the reconquest”.

Being a promoter of the “great replacement” theory and “remigration” which demands that all immigrants should be returned back home, the young activist, Rieu, has been known to circulate fake news on social media and has been sued by anti-racism organisations such as SOS Racism for incitement to racial and religious hate.

In 2018, Damien helped in the organisation of an operation called “Defend Europe” in which several GI members formed a human barrier to block a border crossing between France and Italy in the Alps, raising a large banner with the message: “Closed border. You will not make Europe your home. No way. Go home”.

Since 2019, Damien Rieu has become the parliamentary assistant to Philippe Olivier, a member of the European Parliament representing the right-wing National Rally party (formerly the National Front). Damien is a candidate in the 2021 departmental elections in the Canton of Peronne under the label of the National Rally.

The young politician also writes for far-right sites such as FdeSouche and often reviews xenophobic and Islamophobic books on his YouTube channel.

Evidence of Hate Speech/Incitement:

October 2021: In a tweet, criticising social media reactions towards a Muslim woman who decided to take off her hijab in front of Eric Zemmour while debating with him her choice of putting it on and taking it off, Damien said “Muslim women are so forced to wear the veil that if they take it off for 20 seconds, they receive thousands of death threats.”

October 2014: During one of the GI meetings in Paris, Damien Rieu stated regarding Islam and immigration: “To these two issues, Islam and immigration, GI has always carried a lucid, pragmatic, uncompromising solution: Remigration. The voluntary or non-voluntary return of the majority of non-European colonizers imported to France in the last 40 years.” In the same meeting, Damien stated “France is in the process of a rapid Africanization (...) If we are talking about Islam, let us talk, above all, about immigration, because the beginning is immigration.
