Biography

Al Mutairi is a Kuwaiti Islamic theologian, politician and academic. The president of the unofficial Ummah Party in Kuwait, and professor in the Department of Interpretation and Hadith in the College of Sharia at Kuwait University, Al Mutairi regularly tweets and posts on social media channels on contemporary geopolitical developments across the Middle East, with a particular focus on foreign intervention, the mistreatment of Muslims across the world, the war being waged against Islam and Muslims by some countries, including the U.S, France, Russia and Iran, in collusion with Gulf states, Egypt and Israel.

Al Mutairi is one of the most prominent Kuwaiti Salafi activists, having pursued graduate studies in Mecca during the 1990-1991 Gulf War, and gaining a strong network within the Saudi Sahwa Salafi movement, which later influenced Al Mutairi’s ability to expand Kuwait’s Salafi transnational network. Even before the Arab Spring, Kuwait was the only country that openly allowed its Salafi elements to propagate their views, and is still considered a global meeting point for transnational activist Salafis.

Al Mutairi is outspoken on several issues, including the recent display of the Prophet Muhammad’s cartoons in Paris, subsequently calling on all Muslims to boycott French products. He is also reportedly said to have influenced the Saudi air force officer who carried out the Pensacola Air Base shooting in Florida in December 2019. In June 2020, recordings surfaced that Al Mutairi and former Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi conspired to spread violence and chaos across Persian Gulf countries to counter U.S. forces there.
